Lib Dems get their revenge on electoral reform

Britain's Liberal Democrats succeed last night in frustrating a Conservative move for electoral reform – as a measure of revenge for last year's defeat over the House of Lords, but also due to their own self-interest.

Czechs get a new president

The new Czech president comes from the left but won the support of incumbent Václav Klaus as well as opponents of austerity. It's an interesting combination.

Cliffhanger election boosts Germany’s liberals

Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats went down to defeat in a cliffhanger state election in Germany yesterday. But it's not all bad news for them, since a liberal revival is a good omen for their national prospects.

Austria votes to keep conscription

Austrians voted yesterday to retain military conscription, in a victory for the centre-right ahead of this year's general election. But that's very much going against the trend in Europe. It's also something of a reversal of the usual position.

Christians claiming relief from discrimination won one case out of four at the European Court of Human Rights. But in Australia, the issue is their right to discriminate against others.

Italy latest: Berlusconi “ruled out” as PM

A new electoral pact supposedly rules out Silvio Berlusconi as a candidate for prime minister. Doesn't sound like him at all, does it?
